UITBB statement on World Refugee Day 2024

UITBB statement on World Refugee Day – June 20, 2024

Today, June 20, we mark World Refugee Day, a day dedicated to recognising and supporting the struggle of millions of displaced individuals and families around the globe. The Trades Union International of Workers of the Building, Wood, and Building Materials Industries (UITBB) stands in unwavering solidarity with these refugees who have been uprooted from their homes by conflict, persecution, and economic instability.

The difficulties that refugees are facing, highlights the systemic issues and injustices perpetuated by capitalism and imperialism. The economic system, driven by the relentless pursuit of profit by a small elite, worsens poverty and forces many to flee in search of safety and a better life. These individuals, risk everything, not out of choice, but out of necessity; no one wants to leave their home.

UITBB believes that it is very important for everyone to know the true nature of this problem. The capitalist and imperialist circles wage the wars for new spheres of influences, causing the waves of refugees. These circles also steal the countries’ resources and wealth, impoverishing the people and creating very harsh conditions that force them to leave their homes. These circles are the same exact ones which then exploit these vulnerable people when they come to the host country, for profit. At the same time, they use them to divide the working class, nurturing xenophobia, fascism, and racism, which we see on the rise throughout the world today.

UITBB asserts that the working class must remain united and undivided. We stand with all refugees and immigrant workers, advocating for their rights and a better future. As a global trade union movement committed to class solidarity, we will continue to defend their right to a dignified life and decent working conditions.

On this World Refugee Day, let us commit to collective action to build a world where no one is forced to flee their home, where workers are united in their pursuit of justice, and where refugees are welcomed with humanity and compassion. Together, we can create a future where everyone can live in peace and security.
