Solidarity with the July 9th Strike in India
The Trades Unions International of Workers of the Building, Wood and Building Materials
Industries (UITBB), on behalf of the millions of workers and dozens of trade unions it represents in the construction sector around the world, expresses its full support and solidarity to the Indian workers who are going on a nationwide strike on July 9th 2025, called by the Joint Platform of Trade Unions.
UITBB strongly condemns the implementation of Labour Codes that fundamentally threaten
workers’ basic democratic rights to organize, engage in collective bargaining, and undertake collective action. These codes represent a dangerous assault on workers’ dignity and economic security, prioritizing corporate profits over workers’ welfare.
The BJP-led government’s aggressive neoliberal agenda weakens collective bargaining rights, reduces safety standards, and facilitates corporate exploitation. This struggle is part of a global fight against systematic dismantling of workers’ rights. The resistance by Indian trade unions inspires working people worldwide facing similar attacks on their fundamental rights. UITBB calls upon all affiliated organizations to express active solidarity through statements of support and solidarity actions, raise international awareness about anti-worker policies in India, strengthen international cooperation among trade unions, and support long-term organizing efforts of Indian trade unions.
We demand the immediate withdrawal of anti-worker Labour Codes, the protection of workers’ organizing rights, the reversal of harmful privatization policies, and the implementation of policies prioritizing workers’ welfare and social justice.
We stand with the workers of India! We are together in this fight!
On behalf of the UITBB Secretariat,
Michalis Papanikolaou,
UITBB General Secretary
