UITBB statement on International Women’s Day

The Trades Union International of Workers in the Building, Wood, Building Materials and Allied Industries (UITBB) extends its militant solidarity greetings on International Women’s Day 2026 to all women worldwide, with special gratitude to working women in the construction and related sectors.

This March 8 marks 115 years since the first protests that sparked the global observance of International Women’s Day, for dignity, fair conditions, and true equality. Today, with all the challenges and threats that exist, the struggle for women’s rights remains as urgent as ever.

Women in our sectors shoulder the biggest burden in the form of unpaid care work, economic insecurity, gender pay gap, inadequate maternity leaves, sexual harassment, gender-based violence and inadequate representation and leadership positions in male-dominated sectors like construction.

UITBB reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the cause of working women, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the class struggle against exploitation. Women trade unionists, who are at the forefront of workplace organizing, deserve our deepest respect and support as they challenge discrimination and push for systemic change.

For years, UITBB has actively championed women’s rights through international campaigns, educational initiatives, seminars, and mobilizations. Our demands for our women workers are equitable pay, safe workplaces, protection against harassment, proper maternity leaves, incentives and family-friendly policies that will allow them to succeed in the construction industry.

We urge all UITBB affiliated members to celebrate International Women’s Day 2026 with events, mobilisations and other solidarity efforts, to highlight the ongoing challenges of working women.

Let us all intensify our collective efforts to defend and expand women’s rights, as we work towards true equality and social justice for all.
